The 2016 presidential election in the U.S. comes at a time of seemingly unprecedented divisiveness, hateful rhetoric and prejudice in our culture. Because the campaign accusations are so sharp, pointed and sometimes vulgar, it may seem that this level of unabashed conflict is new.

However the deep discord we are experiencing within humanity has been present since the beginning of time, repeating itself over and over through unsuspecting generations. In fact the original divide was within ourselves, but the ego projects this divide onto the nearest and most convenient neighbor, deciding to be a victim and taking up arms for independence and survival.

The cycle continues over time when one side of a conflict, having forgotten the wars of their ancestors and own past lives, starts to bring their unconscious wounds to the surface to heal. Regrettably they misunderstand the nature of soul memories and believe the pain is happening now and the source of their fearful thoughts is the person front of them.

Overcome by fear, they create a new storyline that assigns blame to their neighbor and sparks a defensive fire. There is safety in numbers, so the accuser seeks agreement amongst their peers and adds a little fear-mongering for good measure. Now the fear rages as a towering inferno ready to wipe out the so-called wrong-doers and protect the virtue of all who see themselves as a victims.

The opposition believes THEY are the victim of an unprovoked attack and launches their own defensive campaign to squash the wrong-doers and protect their virtue. This back and forth is called karma (which can either be in the form of payback or giveback).

Unfortunately defensiveness perpetuates karma rather than allowing the original wounds to heal and complete the cycle. Completing the cycle allows humanity to grow from our experiences and expand our awareness of our true Spiritual Nature, but it requires us to allow the wounds to surface and then actually let them go. We naturally want to release our wounds but few are willing to do what it takes to remain neutral while the healing happens. They would rather just talk about it, validate their pain and suffering and even proselytize their experience to the masses.

This is why modern culture is obsessed with seeking out, dealing with or avoiding our wounds through the abuse of street drugs and narcotics, anti-depressant and psychotropic pharmaceuticals, prescription drug abuse, self-help books, psychotherapy, weight loss programs, exercise programs, transformational seminars, alcoholics anonymous, sex anonymous, eaters anonymous, etc. Americans are obsessed with their problems, but not so much about seeing the truth of why we created them in the first place.

The good news is that healing our wounds is not that complicated. When wounds are allowed to come to the surface and are treated with neutrality, respect, compassion, and forgiveness, there is no need for the karmic cycle to keep repeating. And most importantly, it allows humanity to become aware of their true nature as Spirit; the true purpose of incarnation.

So how do we stop the cycle of divisiveness? We can’t just talk about it. We must get completely neutral and heal ourselves. We will not be free from our karmic cycles until we first dismantle the thoughts that create the wounds in our own mind. If there were a baker's recipe for ending karma, it might be like this…

4 cups Meditation

2 cups Inner Stillness

3 Tbs. Neutrality

1 pinch of Amusement

1 cup Acceptance

1 stick of Compassion, melted

2 Tbs. Courage

3 cups Gratitude

8 drops of Forgiveness

1 sheet of Oneness

But before you write these items off as a theoretical list of virtues, know that it represents an actual set of steps to ending karma that is anything but intellectual. This list has nothing to do with being right or wrong, good or bad. Each of these virtues is a key to an individual door within our consciousness that opens our awareness to a level of understanding beyond what our little ego mind can fathom.

As you master each of these steps, you create a foundational toolkit that allows you to complete the cycles of victim and aggressor and end all pain and suffering. While you may “think” you understand each of these virtues, until you learn their divine purpose, how to use them and how to access them in the face of your fears, they cannot free you from your karma.
